What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine involves treating injuries, such as tendinitis and plantar fasciitis, by stimulating the body’s own repair mechanisms, such as cytokines, to functionally restore damaged tissue long-term. Alternatively, cortisone injections (a man-made synthetic version of cortisol) provide short-term pain and inflammation relief by inhibiting the action of cytokines and the immune response. In a nutshell, Regenerative Medicine aids the body in healing itself while cortisone injections only mask the pain and inflammation.

CONDITIONS TREATED:

  • Arthritis
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Sports Injuries
  • Sprains and Strains
  • Bursitis
  • Muscle, tendons, or ligament tears
  • Chronic Wounds / Diabetic Ulcers

TYPES OF REGENERATIVE MEDICINE:

  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) uses a concentrated form of your own blood to stimulate growth factors and healing of diseased tissue.
  • Placental Tissue is derived from the umbilical cord and contains more proteins and growth factors than PRP.

What is the Regenerative Medicine procedure?

If you are looking for an alternative to surgery or have failed with cortisone injections, you may be a candidate for Regenerative Medicine. The process takes about 30 minutes in our clinic. For PRP, we will draw your blood and concentrate it. No blood draw is required for Placental Tissue injections, Dr. Dreyer will inject your foot/ankle utilizing ultrasound to visualize the needle and diseased tissue. You will typically be required to decrease activity and walk in a CAM boot for several weeks to protect the area. Results are typically seen in weeks to months. Some patients require 1 -3 injections. Some pain and swelling at the injection site can be expected.
